Inspired by the nationwide screenings of To Heal the Heart (Feature Film Version), The Harbor Lights was produced by Minato Studio, a company founded to bring stories from the expressive port city of Kobe to the world.
Miu Tomita, in her first leading role in a feature film, gives a remarkable performance as Akari, capturing her pain, inner conflict and growth. The film is directed by Mojiri Adachi, who has directed numerous dramas at NHK for more than 20 years, including Come Come Everybody.
Based on extensive and careful research with the people of Kobe, this original story portrays life after the earthquake with honesty and depth.
STORY
Born in the year of the Great Hanshin Earthquake, Akari is a third-generation Korean resident in Japan.
Haunted by the trauma of the disaster and a lifetime of discrimination, her father tries to pass down both the painful memories of the past and a deep sense of cultural pride. But for Akari, the earthquake is a distant event—one she neither remembers nor feels connected to.
Torn between her father's expectations and her own evolving sense of self, she begins to question everything: her identity, her heritage, and the path she truly wants to follow.
